What Wine to Bring to a Dinner Party (Without Overthinking It)

Buying Guides · Entertaining

If you don't know the menu, bring a bottle of dry sparkling wine or a light, fresh red such as cru Beaujolais or Pinot Noir. Both go with almost any food, both can be opened right away, and both feel like a considered choice. Spend $20 to $40, and bring it ready to drink.

We built our Go-To Dinner Party Wines collection around exactly that brief. Here's the thinking behind it, plus a few rules of guest etiquette.

What is the safest wine to bring to a dinner party?

Sparkling wine. It works as an aperitif, it goes with salty snacks, fried food, seafood and even dessert, and people are always glad to see it. Champagne is the splurge. Crémant (French sparkling wine made the same way outside Champagne), Cava and pet-nat are the value picks.

The second-safest choice is a light, high-acid red: cru Beaujolais, Pinot Noir, Loire Cabernet Franc or Frappato. They pair with chicken, pork, salmon, pasta and vegetables, and they don't clash with spicy or sweet food the way big, oaky reds do.

Should you bring red or white wine?

Ask the host what's cooking. If that feels awkward, match the season: whites, rosé and bubbles in warm weather, lighter reds in cool weather. When in doubt, bring one of each; two $20 bottles almost always go over better than one $40 bottle.

If the menu is… Bring…
Steak, lamb, braised meat Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Nebbiolo
Roast chicken, pork Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, Chardonnay
Fish, shellfish Albariño, Chablis, Muscadet, sparkling
Pasta with tomato sauce Chianti, Barbera, Sangiovese
Spicy food Off-dry Riesling, rosé, Gamay
Unknown Sparkling wine or cru Beaujolais

How much should you spend on a bottle for a dinner party?

$20 to $40 is the sweet spot. Under $20, choose a producer you trust rather than a supermarket brand. Over $50 starts to feel like a gift the host should save, which is lovely but means it probably won't be poured that night. Our guide to wines under $30 lists the regions where value is easiest to find.

Will the host open the wine you bring?

Maybe not, and that's fine. A bottle you bring is a gift, and the host may already have wines matched to the menu. If you want it opened, bring it chilled and say so: "I brought this to have with dinner." If it's meant for later, say that instead: "This one's for you, for another night."

What should you avoid bringing?

  • Anything that needs decanting for hours, such as young Barolo or Bordeaux.
  • Very sweet wine, unless you know dessert calls for it.
  • Warm white wine. Chill it before you leave, or bring a red.
  • Your most divisive bottle. Save the funky natural wine for friends who already love it.

FAQ

What is a good wine to bring to a dinner party?

Dry sparkling wine or a light red such as cru Beaujolais or Pinot Noir. Both pair with most foods and can be opened right away.

How much should I spend on wine for a dinner party?

About $20 to $40 per bottle. Two $20 bottles, one red and one white, often go further than a single expensive bottle.

Is it rude if the host doesn't open the wine I brought?

No. A bottle you bring is a gift, and the host may have already planned the wines. Say "for dinner" if you would like it opened that night.

Should I bring red or white wine to dinner?

Match the menu if you know it. If you do not, bring sparkling wine or one bottle of each.
