More Information

La Porta di Vertine is a pure expression of high-altitude Chianti Classico, sourced from an amphitheater-shaped vineyard just outside the medieval hamlet of Vertine in Gaiole in Chianti. These elevated sites bring cooler temperatures and longer ripening, preserving freshness while allowing Sangiovese to develop depth and structure. The grapes are hand harvested and aged for 16 months in concrete tanks, a deliberate choice that highlights fruit clarity, savory nuance, and the natural energy that defines this part of Tuscany. Made by Bertinga, named Gambero Rosso’s Best Emergent Producer in 2022, this is classic Chianti Classico with lift, precision, and a strong sense of place.

Tasting Notes

About Bertinga

Nestled on an exceptional hillside site in Gaiole in Chianti, Bertinga represents one of Tuscany's most remarkable success stories. Though founded just in 2015, this boutique winery stands on hallowed ground - the legendary vineyard parcels were previously owned by the renowned Castello di Ama and have been producing exceptional fruit for decades.

Under the vision of owners Anatoly Korneev and Maxim Kashirin (founders of Simple Group), Bertinga has transformed these historic 16.4 hectares into a world-class operation that has rewritten Italian wine history in less than a decade.

Critical Acclaim & Awards:

In 2021, Gambero Rosso named Volta di Bertinga 2016 "the best Italian Merlot" - an extraordinary achievement for a winery's debut vintage. The following year, Bertinga was awarded "Best Emergent Producer 2022" by the prestigious Guida Essenziale ai Vini d'Italia, curated by internationally renowned wine critic Daniel Cernilli (co-founder of Gambero Rosso).

The accolades reached global heights when James Suckling ranked Volta di Bertinga 2019 at #27 in his "Top 100 Wines in the World" and #3 in his "Top 100 Wines of Italy," awarding it a remarkable 99 points. Even more impressive, in a blind tasting of the world's best Merlots - including legends like Pétrus and Le Pin - the 2019 Volta di Bertinga was voted the top wine by over 20 expert tasters, including Suckling himself.

Italy's biggest newspaper, Corriere della Sera, included Volta di Bertinga 2019 in the top 10 best wines of Italy, placing it alongside such legends as Masseto, Barbaresco Rabaja from Bruno Giacosa, and Barolo Brunate from Roberto Voerzio.

The Estate:

The estate's three distinct vineyard sites - Bertinga, Adine, and Vertine - each contribute unique characteristics from their clay-limestone soils and varying elevations up to 800 meters. The team, led by Technical Director Elisa Ascani and Sales Director Luca Vitiello, works with renowned consultant oenologist Stéphane Derenoncourt (who also advises Bordeaux legends like Domaine de Chevalier) to craft small-production, terroir-driven wines from organically farmed Sangiovese and Merlot.

Production is extremely limited at just 55,000 bottles annually of their flagship Volta di Bertinga (plus small runs of magnums and jeroboams), ensuring each vintage maintains the exclusivity and attention to detail that has propelled them to international acclaim.

Every wine is single-parcel, single-vineyard, reflecting Bertinga's uncompromising philosophy: let the exceptional terroir speak for itself. The results have been nothing short of meteoric - proving that in the right hands, even a "newcomer" can quickly join the pantheon of Italian wine legends.

From historic vineyard to global recognition in just 10 years.

JAMES SUCKLING (92 Points)

“La Porta di Vertine is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese from Gaiole, and in this 2021 vintage it shines for its vitality: bright, saline and sapid, its tangy cherry and raspberry fruits are underlined by subtle wood and wonderful freshness.”

Falstaff (91 points)

“Pale ruby with a brightening garnet rim. Pronounced aromas of Amarena cherries, forest floor and juniper berries. Dry and powerful on the palate, with animating acidity, notes of fresh fruit and above-average length.”

Bertinga | The new iconic Tuscan Estate

Bertinga is a modern, estate-driven winery located in Gaiole in Chianti, one of the highest and most respected zones within Chianti Classico. Founded with a clear focus on site expression, Bertinga has quickly earned a reputation for producing refined, high-altitude Sangiovese that balances freshness, structure, and precision. Rather than leaning on oak or extraction, the estate emphasizes vineyard character, elevation, and thoughtful restraint in the cellar.

For drinkers seeking Italian wine online that captures the contemporary energy of Chianti Classico without sacrificing tradition, Bertinga offers a clear and compelling voice.

Chianti Classico Terroir and Sangiovese
Gaiole in Chianti sits in the eastern hills of the appellation, where higher elevations, cooler temperatures, and rocky soils shape a more lifted style of Sangiovese. Vineyards here ripen slowly, preserving acidity and aromatic clarity while developing savory depth and firm, fine-grained tannins.

Bertinga’s vineyards include elevated, amphitheater-shaped sites near the medieval hamlet of Vertine, where constant airflow and sun exposure create ideal growing conditions. These sites produce Sangiovese with bright red fruit, iron-tinged earth, and a sense of tension that defines great Chianti Classico from this zone.

Farming and Winemaking Philosophy
In the vineyards, Bertinga prioritizes careful farming and hand harvesting to ensure healthy fruit and precise ripeness. In the cellar, the approach is intentionally minimal. Fermentations are handled gently, and aging often takes place in concrete, allowing purity, freshness, and texture to take center stage without the influence of new wood.

This restrained philosophy results in wines that feel transparent and composed, letting vineyard and vintage lead rather than technique.

Style and Why These Wines Matter

Bertinga’s wines sit at the intersection of tradition and modern clarity. They deliver the savory structure and food-friendliness expected of Chianti Classico, paired with a freshness and polish that make them immediately engaging.

These are wines that reward attention without demanding long cellaring. They show how high-altitude Chianti Classico can be both expressive and precise, offering depth without heaviness and intensity without excess.

In a region where styles can swing toward rusticity or over-modernization, Bertinga stands out for its balance and confidence.
