James Suckling - Score 96; Date 2025-05-27
"Restrained, slightly low-key wine at the very first sniff, then tantalizing aromas of vibrant orange peel and dried flowers emerge, together with a lot of cinnamon. Full-bodied, showing firm, velvety tannins with the slightly dusty texture that's typical of nebbiolo. Good weight and density, as well as poise and balance, with a long, refreshing finish. Drinkable now, but with a long life ahead."

Wine Advocate - Score 92; Date 2025-06-19
"Fruit for this blended wine comes from the villages of Barbaresco (Muncagota and Ronchi) and Neive (Cottà and Basarin). The Moccagatta 2022 Barbaresco makes a lovely powdery first impression with chalky aromas followed by wild cherry, blue flower, licorice and something citrusy like kumquat or pink grapefruit. The alcohol is recorded as 15% in this hot-vintage wine, but that heat is not too powerful. With 12 months of aging in barrique, you get an open-knit texture and grippy tannins. Production is 11,000 bottles."

Jeb Dunnuck - Score 91; Date 2025-05-06
"The 2022 Barbaresco is a saturated red color and is spicy and ripe on the nose with notes of crushed cherries, dark spices, and fresh tobacco. It's concentrated on the palate, with a ripe feel, medium to full-bodied richness, a more robust tannin structure, and a ripe finish with good length. It's a ripe style though well-managed to enjoy over the next 7-8 years."

Moccagatta: Tradition, Terroir, and the Elegant Side of Nebbiolo

Moccagatta is a historic, family-run winery located in the heart of Barbaresco, one of Piedmont’s most revered appellations. For generations, the estate has focused on crafting wines that reflect Nebbiolo’s aromatic complexity and Barbaresco’s hallmark finesse. Rather than chasing power or modern gloss, Moccagatta remains rooted in classic winemaking values, producing wines that are expressive, balanced, and built to evolve gracefully over time.

For wine lovers seeking Italian wine online that delivers authenticity and a true sense of place, Moccagatta offers a compelling introduction to traditional Barbaresco.

Barbaresco Terroir and Nebbiolo

Barbaresco sits on the right bank of the Tanaro River, where slightly warmer temperatures and calcareous marl soils give Nebbiolo a more approachable profile compared to neighboring Barolo. The result is wines that retain Nebbiolo’s signature tannin and perfume while offering earlier accessibility and refined texture.

Moccagatta farms vineyards across Barbaresco and Neive, sourcing fruit from well-situated hillside parcels that emphasize aromatic lift, red fruit, and mineral-driven structure. These sites allow the wines to show rose petal, cherry, dried herbs, and subtle earth, with tannins that feel firm yet polished.

Farming and Winemaking Philosophy

In the vineyard, Moccagatta focuses on careful site selection and attentive farming to ensure balanced fruit and healthy vines. In the cellar, the approach is traditional and restrained. Fermentations are handled to preserve Nebbiolo’s aromatic clarity, and aging takes place in oak that supports structure without overwhelming the wine.

This philosophy results in Barbaresco wines that feel composed and transparent, allowing terroir and vintage to lead rather than cellar technique.

Style and Why These Wines Matter

Moccagatta’s wines highlight Barbaresco’s strength as a region: elegance with substance. These are Nebbiolo wines that reward patience but don’t demand decades of waiting. They offer complexity without heaviness, structure without aggression, and aromatics that continue to evolve in the glass.

In a market crowded with heavily extracted or overtly polished Nebbiolo, Moccagatta stands out for its sense of balance and restraint, making the wines appealing to both seasoned collectors and newer drinkers exploring Piedmont for the first time.

Why We Carry Moccagatta

We carry Moccagatta because it represents Barbaresco the way we love it most: lifted, graceful, and honest. These wines deliver classic Nebbiolo character without excess, offering real value and age-worthiness while remaining deeply food-friendly. Moccagatta is a producer we trust to show what Barbaresco does best, vintage after vintage.
