Founded in 1999 by Sara Pérez (Mas Martinet) and René Barbier Jr. (Clos Mogador), Venus La Universal is a small, artisanal estate in Montsant, Spain. The project reflects their shared vision: to craft natural, terroir-driven wines that balance elegance with authenticity.

The vineyards, rooted in granite, slate, and clay soils, are farmed organically and biodynamically, with old bush vines of Garnacha and Carignan forming the backbone of the wines. Hand-harvesting, native yeast fermentations, and gentle aging in neutral oak or amphora preserve purity and freshness.

Wines like Venus “La Universal” and Dido showcase Montsant’s identity — fragrant, mineral, and soulful — proving that this region can stand alongside Priorat as a source of fine Spanish wine. Family-driven and artisanal at its core, Venus La Universal is a benchmark for natural, small-producer wines from Catalonia.

Venus La Universal: A Feminine Vision of Montsant

The Story of Sara Pérez and René Barbier Jr.

Venus La Universal is the joint project of Sara Pérez and René Barbier Jr., two names synonymous with the modern revival of Catalonia’s wine country. Both are heirs to legendary families — Sara of Mas Martinet and René of Clos Mogador — but together they forged a new path in 1999 when they founded Venus La Universal in the Montsant appellation. Their goal was bold yet simple: to make wines that reflect Montsant’s rugged terroir through an artisanal, small-scale, and deeply personal lens.

A Vineyard in Montsant

The vineyards of Venus La Universal lie in the hills surrounding Falset, where granite, slate, and clay soils converge to create extraordinary diversity. This region, encircling the famed Priorat, offers its own distinct identity: less powerful perhaps, but more nuanced, with elegance and aromatic lift. Old bush vines of Garnacha and Carignan form the backbone of the estate, complemented by Syrah and other Mediterranean varieties. Farming is organic and biodynamic, with a focus on soil vitality and biodiversity — no chemicals, careful manual work, and deep respect for the landscape.

The Philosophy: Natural and Artisanal Wine

Sara and René’s ethos is one of minimal intervention and maximum expression. Grapes are hand-harvested, fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts, and extraction is gentle. Wines age in large neutral oak, foudres, or amphorae, where oxygen can work slowly and naturally. The goal is purity — wines that are alive, textured, and transparent to both grape and site. Venus La Universal has become an emblem of artisanal Montsant, showing that fine wine doesn’t need scale, but instead devotion to craft and authenticity.

The Wines of Venus La Universal

  • Venus “La Universal”: The flagship red, a blend of Garnacha, Carignan, and Syrah, offering floral perfume, red fruit purity, spice, and a mineral backbone. It is structured yet graceful, with real aging potential.

  • Dido Blanc and Dido Rosat: Lighter, expressive wines that capture the freshness of Montsant’s microclimates, crafted with the same artisanal care.

  • Venus de Cartoixà and Venus de la Figuera: Small-lot bottlings that explore single sites or varieties in greater detail, always emphasizing terroir character and finesse.

Why Venus La Universal Matters Today

Venus La Universal represents the new face of Spanish fine wine: natural in spirit, artisanal in practice, and deeply connected to place. By championing Montsant’s potential, Sara Pérez and René Barbier Jr. have proven that this region deserves recognition alongside its more famous neighbor, Priorat. Their wines are elegant, soulful, and unpretentious — expressions of family heritage and personal vision, made for drinkers who value authenticity over convention.
