History and Heritage
Salcheto is an artisanal winery in Montepulciano, Tuscany, founded in 1984 and named after the willow-lined stream near its vineyards. In 1997, Michele Manelli took over and transformed it into one of Italy’s most forward-thinking estates, expanding from just a few hectares to nearly 60 today. From the start, the focus has been on Vino Nobile di Montepulciano—their very first wine—and later the estate’s single-vineyard flagship, Salco. Salcheto has grown in reputation by producing wines rooted in Tuscan tradition while pioneering sustainability at every level.
Pioneers in Sustainability
Salcheto is a global leader in eco-conscious winemaking. The estate has been organically farmed since the late 1990s and fully certified organic and biodynamic since 2009. In 2011, they unveiled Italy’s first completely off-grid winery, powered by solar, geothermal, and biomass energy, designed with gravity-flow systems and natural light wells. This drastically reduced energy use and CO₂ emissions, saving millions of kWh and thousands of tons of carbon over the past decade.
Salcheto also made history as the first winery in the world to certify the carbon footprint of a wine bottle, cutting its emissions by nearly 40% since 2009. They publish an annual sustainability report, recycle virtually all water and waste, and developed an ultra-light eco-bottle. Even packaging has been reimagined: “Il Fiasco,” their boxed 3L Sangiovese, revives Tuscany’s classic straw flask in an eco-smart, no-plastic format, lowering packaging emissions by over 40%.
Winemaking and Philosophy
Sangiovese, known locally as Prugnolo Gentile, is the soul of Salcheto. The estate relies on indigenous yeasts, minimal intervention, and gentle gravity-flow handling to preserve fruit purity. Many wines are made with very low sulfites, and the Obvius line has none at all. Fermentations emphasize delicacy and freshness, while large casks and even amphorae are used to showcase terroir without heavy oak. The result is wines that are vibrant, approachable, and authentic—modern in clarity yet deeply traditional in spirit.
The Wines of Salcheto
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano: Elegant Sangiovese with bright cherry, raspberry, and savory spice. The 2021 vintage shows juicy fruit with eucalyptus and tobacco notes, balanced by fine tannins.
“Salco” Vino Nobile: From the estate’s oldest vines, this is a powerful, complex cru with layers of dried cherry, plum, leather, and spice. Ageworthy and consistently award-winning.
Rosso di Montepulciano & Chianti “Biskero”: Fresh, fruit-driven everyday reds, offering juicy cherry and plum flavors with smooth finishes—easy companions at the table.
Obvius Line (Rosso, Bianco, Rosato, Giallo Oro): Natural wines made without added sulfites. Rosso bursts with pure cherry and berry fruit, Bianco shows citrus, flowers, and almond, Rosato brings strawberry and pomegranate freshness, and Giallo Oro is a luscious golden dessert wine.
“The Fiasco” (3L Boxed Sangiovese): An eco-friendly revival of Tuscany’s historic flask, delivering vibrant red cherry, plum, and herbal spice in a convenient, sustainable package.
Style and Taste
Salcheto’s wines share a signature style: pure fruit expression, bright acidity, and polished tannins. Reds often show cherry, berry, and floral notes with subtle earthy spice, always lively and drinkable. Whites and rosato are aromatic and savory yet refreshing, while the sweet Giallo Oro is rich but balanced. Whether flagship or everyday, the wines are united by honesty, freshness, and a sense of place.
Critical Acclaim
Salcheto has earned top awards, including multiple Tre Bicchieri honors from Gambero Rosso and consistent 90+ scores from international critics. The 2021 Vino Nobile received 92 points from both Wine Spectator and James Suckling, and Decanter has placed Salcheto among the top estates of Montepulciano. More than ratings, though, the estate is celebrated as a pioneer—proving that great wine and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.
