About Nicole Chanrion
Nicole Chanrion’s Domaine de la Voûte des Crozes is a masterclass in terroir-driven Beaujolais, where six generations of family tradition converge with a vigneronne’s singular vision. Located in the heart of Côte de Brouilly, the domaine’s 6.5 hectares of vines climb the eastern and northeastern mid-slopes of Mont Brouilly, a dormant volcano whose legacy is etched into the soil: blue schist and porphyritic volcanic rock. These mineral-rich, well-draining slopes, planted at a high density of 10,000–12,000 vines per hectare, are the foundation for wines of remarkable structure and aging potential. The 50-year-old Gamay vines are the heart of the production, their deep roots drawing complexity from the ancient bedrock.
Chanrion’s farming is traditional and sustainable ("lutte raisonnée"), a philosophy of minimal intervention that respects the land’s natural balance. She works the entire domaine—pruning, canopy management, driving tractors, and bottling—almost single-handedly, a testament to her dedication and giving her an intimate, unparalleled connection to every vine. This hands-on mastery extends to the cellar, where her winemaking is a pure expression of traditional Beaujolais methods. The grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a 100% whole-cluster fermentation in large stainless steel tanks, initiating a full carbonic maceration. This process, where whole berries ferment inside their own skins, preserves vibrant fruit character and floral aromatics. After fermentation, the wine is pressed and transferred to large, neutral oak foudres (65-hectoliter capacity) for a minimum of nine months of aging, where it completes malolactic fermentation and develops texture and harmony. Crucially, the wines are bottled unfiltered, ensuring nothing is lost of their authentic, unadulterated character.
The result is a Côte de Brouilly that defies the lightweight stereotype of Beaujolais. These are powerful, complex, and age-worthy reds, bursting with pure, concentrated fruit—think fresh strawberries, raspberries, and black cherries—lifted by floral notes and grounded by a pronounced, stony minerality. The tannins are fine-grained yet present, providing a robust structure that allows the wines to evolve beautifully for 15 years or more, gaining layers of earth, spice, and sous-bois. Her commitment to quality has earned her the affectionate title "La Patronne de la Côte" and the respect of her peers, culminating in her role as president of the Côte de Brouilly appellation from 2000. With her son Romain now by her side, Nicole Chanrion’s legacy of crafting profound, authentic wines from volcanic slopes continues to inspire.
