Craggy Range is a family-owned winery nestled in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, set under the iconic slopes of Te Mata Peak. From its very beginnings, the goal wasn’t just to grow grapes, but to craft wines that reflect the unique soils, climate, and spirit of place.
A Vision Rooted in Legacy
In 1997, Terry and Mary Peabody founded Craggy Range, partnering with Steve Smith MW to identify parcels of land with true character. They were determined to pursue single-vineyard expressions rather than mass blends. Over decades, that commitment led them to prime sites in Gimblett Gravels (Hawke’s Bay) and Te Muna Road (Martinborough), among others, choosing soils and exposures that could tell a story in the glass. Their estate is governed by a 1,000-year family trust, a symbolic gesture underscoring their long-term commitment to land and legacy.
Terroir & Styles
Craggy Range’s vineyards benefit from Hawke’s Bay’s warm, maritime climate—sunny days and cool nights—and well-draining gravel soils (especially in Gimblett Gravels) that stress vines and intensify flavors. In Martinborough, cooler conditions bring elegance and tension, particularly in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They produce several tiers of wines: Prestige, Estate, Appellation, and occasional Limited Editions. Among their flagship bottles are Le Sol (Syrah), Sophia (a Bordeaux-style blend), Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay, and Aroha Pinot Noir.
Stylistically, they aim for purity, balance, and site reflection. Their reds typically show depth, spice, dark fruits, and structure; their whites bring intensity, mineral nuance, and length. Their flagship wines are expressive but never overwrought—there’s both power and elegance.
Hospitality & Recognition
Craggy Range isn’t just about wine—it’s a destination. At their Giants Estate in Havelock North, they offer tastings, fine dining, boutique lodgings, gardens, and immersive wine experiences. Their restaurant has won top honors, and in 2025 they were awarded Hawke’s Bay’s global recognition in Best of Wine Tourism for both culinary and architectural excellence.
