Craggy Range’s 2024 Martinborough Pinot Noir embodies the finesse and precision of central New Zealand—silken, aromatic, and vivid.

"Of the six Pinot Noirs from New Zealand to feature in our Top 50 selections since 2018, this is the third to come from Wairarapa’s Martinborough (the other three, unsurprisingly, have been Central Otago wines). This is an uncompromisingly dark wine that plays to New Zealand’s strengths in terms of purity and vivacity of fruit: raspberry, cherry and plum come streaming from the glass, and the fine meshing of fruit and oak in this wine adds to its lustre and appeal. In the mouth, the wine is both long and broad but not in any way clumsy, and the fruit flavours (raspberry to the fore again) are hypnotic. Svelte tannins are barely palpable, so there’s no textural barrier to entry." - 97 Points, Decanter Magazine

Craggy Range – New Zealand’s Terroir Pioneer

Founded in 1997 by the Peabody family, Craggy Range quickly became a leading voice for New Zealand fine wine. The estate’s philosophy is built around single-vineyard expressions, with key holdings in Hawke’s Bay’s Gimblett Gravels and Martinborough’s Te Muna Road.

Flagship wines like Le Sol Syrah, Sophia (a Bordeaux blend), and Aroha Pinot Noir highlight the diversity of New Zealand terroir, combining ripe New World fruit with structure and finesse. Whites such as Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay add another dimension to their range.

Craggy Range is more than a winery—it’s a destination, with an award-winning restaurant and luxury lodgings at their Giants Estate. Today, the estate stands as a benchmark for quality, sustainability, and terroir-driven winemaking in New Zealand, admired on the world stage.

Craggy Range – The Visionary Estate Redefining New Zealand Wine

Craggy Range is a family-owned winery nestled in Hawke’s Bay, New Zealand, set under the iconic slopes of Te Mata Peak. From its very beginnings, the goal wasn’t just to grow grapes, but to craft wines that reflect the unique soils, climate, and spirit of place.

A Vision Rooted in Legacy

In 1997, Terry and Mary Peabody founded Craggy Range, partnering with Steve Smith MW to identify parcels of land with true character. They were determined to pursue single-vineyard expressions rather than mass blends. Over decades, that commitment led them to prime sites in Gimblett Gravels (Hawke’s Bay) and Te Muna Road (Martinborough), among others, choosing soils and exposures that could tell a story in the glass. Their estate is governed by a 1,000-year family trust, a symbolic gesture underscoring their long-term commitment to land and legacy.

Terroir & Styles

Craggy Range’s vineyards benefit from Hawke’s Bay’s warm, maritime climate—sunny days and cool nights—and well-draining gravel soils (especially in Gimblett Gravels) that stress vines and intensify flavors. In Martinborough, cooler conditions bring elegance and tension, particularly in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They produce several tiers of wines: Prestige, Estate, Appellation, and occasional Limited Editions. Among their flagship bottles are Le Sol (Syrah), Sophia (a Bordeaux-style blend), Les Beaux Cailloux Chardonnay, and Aroha Pinot Noir.

Stylistically, they aim for purity, balance, and site reflection. Their reds typically show depth, spice, dark fruits, and structure; their whites bring intensity, mineral nuance, and length. Their flagship wines are expressive but never overwrought—there’s both power and elegance.

Hospitality & Recognition

Craggy Range isn’t just about wine—it’s a destination. At their Giants Estate in Havelock North, they offer tastings, fine dining, boutique lodgings, gardens, and immersive wine experiences. Their restaurant has won top honors, and in 2025 they were awarded Hawke’s Bay’s global recognition in Best of Wine Tourism for both culinary and architectural excellence.

Why Craggy Range Matters

Craggy Range stands out because it bridges New World boldness with Old World respect for place. It shows that New Zealand can produce benchmark wines worthy of global attention, without sacrificing authenticity or integrity. For wine lovers exploring fine wine from beyond Europe, Craggy Range is an essential house—offering both immediate appeal and serious cellaring potential.
